How to set up an email address in Fastmail

Use these instructions to set up an email address on the same domain as your author website. These are instructions for creating your email address in Fastmail; you can find instructions for other email services in your Author Websites dashboard

  1. When you sign up for a Fastmail account, you should use the domain associated with your Author Website. Do this by clicking the toggle that says "Use my own domain", and entering your domain in the appropriate field as you set up your email address:

  2. Once you’ve completed your account verification, go to your account dashboard. Open the drawer that says “Finish setting up email @YOURDOMAIN.com”, then click “Finish domain setup”:

  3. On the next page, decide what happens to mail sent to other addresses at your domain, then click “Continue”:

  4. Indicate that you are using a website at your domain and click “Get instructions”:

  5. Fastmail will now show you instructions for editing your MX and DKIM records. To follow them, start by opening the DNS Records page in your Author Websites dashboard (you can access this page from Settings > DNS Records).

  6. To update your MX records in your Author Websites dashboard:
Copy the priority and value from your Fastmail instructions page into the appropriate fields in your Author Websites dashboard. Click “Save”:

  7. To update your DKIM records in your Author Websites dashboard: This step gets a little tricky; follow closely!
    -  Scroll down to Additional Records in your Author Websites dashboard — don’t edit the DKIM field under Email Authentication.
    - Set the record type to CNAME.
    - Copy the Host value from your Fastmail dashboard and paste it into the Name field in your Author Websites dashboard, then add .YOURDOMAIN.com to the end of the value. For example, if the Host value from Fastmail is fm1._domainkey, you should enter fm1._domainkey.YOURDOMAIN.com.
    - Copy the Value from your Fastmail dashboard and paste it into the Value field in your Author websites dashboard.
    - Repeat this for each CNAME record listed in your Fastmail dashboard.
    - Click “Save”.

  8. To update your SPF record in your Author Websites dashboard:
    - Scroll up to Email Authentication in your Author Websites dashboard.
    - Copy the Value from your Fastmail dashboard and paste it into the field labeled SPF.
    - Click “Save”.

  9. Once you’ve made and saved all these changes in your Author Websites dashboard, click “Check now” at the bottom of the page in your Fastmail dashboard:

  10. You should see a message from Fastmail telling you that your domain is set up to send and receive email.

If you receive an error saying that one or more of your records do not match, confirm that the records were saved in your Author Websites dashboard, wait five minutes, and try again.
